Cuaderno del desierto (The desert notebook)

Hoy os quería presentar algo especial, un cuaderno con historia. 

Mi amigo Pedro pasa un mes en el Sahara todos los años. El año pasado volvió con una piel rícamente decorada. Para aprovecharla comenzó por pasársela a Alfre (ver lista de blogs) que le confeccionó fundas para sus estilográficas y alguna cosilla más que podéis ver en su blog.

Today I bring a special notebook with a particular story. 

My friend Pedro spends a month every year in the Sahara desert helping the less favored there. Last year he came back with a highly decorated piece of leather. In order to use all of it he sent it first to Alfre (you may see his work in my favorite blog list). Alfre knows how to work with leather and he made a nice fountain pen case.

A mi me llegó un buen trozo de esa piel y después de hablar con Pedro en varias ocasiones me encargó hacer “lo que tu quieras, con papel blanco compatible con estilográfica”.

La piel no era cuadrada, ni rectangular, ni nada parecido a un cuaderno habitual.

Mi premisa fue no destrozar los motivos sino adaptarme a ellos y, tras mirarla y doblarla en todos los ángulos posibles, lo que más me gustó fue lo que puede verse en la siguiente foto. Mantendría prácticamente todo el dibujo, el lomo con mucha decoración y el frente curvado me recordó en cierto modo la media luna árabe así que tocaría ajustar el libro a la piel.

I received a good piece of that leather and after talking to Pedro he told me to do "whatever you want as far as it is beautiful", "I want white paper fountain pen friendly".

As you can see the leather piece is not squared nor nothing like a usual notebook. The drawings were so nice that I wanted to keep visible as much as possible so I folded it in several orientations and finally I went for the one in the next picture. The spine would be richly decorated and the curved front kind of reminded me the Arabian moon so I decided to keep that shape and adjust the book to it.

Determiné el grosor adecuado, cosí el cuaderno con papel clairefontaine blanco de 90 gramos y con mucho esfuerzo, bisturí, cutter, lija, y todo lo que se me ocurrió, le di la forma al frente del libro.  

A algo tan colorido y especial no le iba a poner unas guardas estándar. Elegí un papel verjurado pintado a mano por una artista conocida y que tiene tonos verdes y rojos fuertes como la piel.

Normally is the book what determines the cover but in this case I had to calculate the book thickness and the other dimensions according to the leather. Once built, it took me a while to get the curved shape in the front but finally got it. 

For such a special project I chose a special paper for the endpapers. A hand painted paper with matching greens and reds. 

Como la piel estaba muy seca, me decidí por hacer unas tapas sencillas y una encuadernación de lomo redondo sin cajo.

The leather was so dry that I decided to go with a simple bookbinding, just a rounded spine and preformed covers. 

Una vez planteado y procurando que los agujeros de costuras antiguas quedasen en el interior, monté las tapas a base de plegadera y tiempo. Tuve que sortear la sequedad de la piel para conseguir buenas esquinas planas,  los pliegues de la tapa regulares, etc. 

The leather once was once part of some other thing and there was holes of an old stitch that I put in the inside of the covers when possible. A good amount of bone folder to get flat corners and it was finally ready.  

Una vez montado, lo único que no me gustaba era el contraste de los cantos del libro completamente blancos. Aparte de los rojos, verdes y azules, en la piel predominaban los tierras del fondo que para mi son otro guiño al desierto.

A base de tintes, le di a los cantos del cuaderno un fondo parecido y, a modo de adorno, unos toques también verdes y rojos.

Ahora si que me parecía terminado.

When I presented the book inside these covers I did not like the extreme whiteness of the paper in contrast with the "desert" colors of the leather so I decided to paint the edges in an ochre and add also a hint of the red and green present in the leather. 

Y este es el resultado final. Pedro se puso muy contento cuando lo recibió así que yo, contento también.

This is the final result. Pedro was very happy when he received it so I was happy too.
