Cuaderno del desierto (The desert notebook)

Today I bring a special notebook with a particular story.
My friend Pedro spends a month every year in the Sahara desert helping the less favored there. Last year he came back with a highly decorated piece of leather. In order to use all of it he sent it first to Alfre (you may see his work in my favorite blog list). Alfre knows how to work with leather and he made a nice fountain pen case.

I received a good piece of that leather and after talking to Pedro he told me to do "whatever you want as far as it is beautiful", "I want white paper fountain pen friendly".

As you can see the leather piece is not squared nor nothing like a usual notebook. The drawings were so nice that I wanted to keep visible as much as possible so I folded it in several orientations and finally I went for the one in the next picture. The spine would be richly decorated and the curved front kind of reminded me the Arabian moon so I decided to keep that shape and adjust the book to it.

Normally is the book what determines the cover but in this case I had to calculate the book thickness and the other dimensions according to the leather. Once built, it took me a while to get the curved shape in the front but finally got it.

For such a special project I chose a special paper for the endpapers. A hand painted paper with matching greens and reds.

The leather was so dry that I decided to go with a simple bookbinding, just a rounded spine and preformed covers.

The leather once was once part of some other thing and there was holes of an old stitch that I put in the inside of the covers when possible. A good amount of bone folder to get flat corners and it was finally ready.

When I presented the book inside these covers I did not like the extreme whiteness of the paper in contrast with the "desert" colors of the leather so I decided to paint the edges in an ochre and add also a hint of the red and green present in the leather.

This is the final result. Pedro was very happy when he received it so I was happy too.

Today I am presenting a leather notebook model. The whole cover is made of a single piece of greased goat leather. The grease could be a problem but I have seen that after a week or so in my backpack everything is fine. The tact and color of this leather is so fantastic that I took the risk of using it.

As usual, preparation of the signatures, holes and stitching are the base of the work.

As far as your signatures are ready,  for a normal notebook you do not need a sewing frame. I do it while watching TV, in the outside...everywhere I have an available table.
As I mentioned the leather in this case is greased so in order to avoid grease going to the inside of the notebook, I use special endpapers thicker and with a kind of vinyl cover. I also use a good amount of PVA so it forms an extra protection.

This endpaper is also textured and I think it matches perfectly with the leather colour. Bad news are that it is out of stock everywhere so I am now using another method to get similar results. I a future post I will tell you about it.

One last thing. I have learned how to stamp and the leather also behaves perfectly. In this one, the name of the future owner.

I really love these leather notebooks, aging is fantastic, they are rustic while elegant and as usual, the opening is great for writing.

I have several, one with conqueror paper for writing (with my fountain pens), another one with thicker paper for drawing and a special smaller one for traveling where I have combined both types of paper....

Yesterday I went to a course to learn some techniques on direct stamping in bookbinding fabrics. The course was conducted by Ms. Gloria Gallego (http://grabadosgloriagallego.com) a local artist who has developed a great expertise in this area. The course was in "alapiz", a bookbinding association founded by Mª Luisa, our bookbinding teacher.

We went from direct painting in the fabrics to lino-stamp, rubber stamps, etc.

The great advantage for the bookbinder is that there is no need for a rolling press, with the usual ones in a bookbinding workshop you can get great results.

Here are some pictures of my firsts attempts.
The fisrt one can be done by placing tape in some areas of the fabric and painting in the open spaces.

We then made rubber stamps and used things like a cylinder to stamp geometrical motifs.

Seguimos avanzando.

In a piece of eva rubber I made three giraffes, covered them with white and stamped in a black gematex fabric.

For a starter that would be enough  but I liked the giraffes so changed color and orientation and stamped again covering the previous. the result was great (at least to me).

By the end of the day we combined seal stamping with direct painting in a rubber sheet followed by transfer. The african sun looked so good...I also wanted to put a touch of yellow in the giraffes but too much paint caused the yellow to spread.
Nevertheless I think it was a gook starting point that offers lots of possibilities.

Let me finish thanking again to Gloria and Mª Luisa for a really productive day.

And for you, readers, imagine the possibilities of these techniques...from stamping your logos, signatures of favorite pictures to decorate a photo album cover with things related with the contents...
