Cuaderno de piel con solapa (leather notebook with flap)

Hoy os traigo un modelo nuevo de cuaderno. Las tapas y el lomo son una única pieza de piel de cabra engrasada. Al principio mancha un poco pero el color y el tacto que tiene esta piel son espectaculares y le dan al cuaderno un aspecto asombroso. 

Today I am presenting a leather notebook model. The whole cover is made of a single piece of greased goat leather. The grease could be a problem but I have seen that after a week or so in my backpack everything is fine. The tact and color of this leather is so fantastic that I took the risk of using it.

Empezamos por el plegado del papel, agrupamiento en cuadernillos, serrado de éstos y cosido del cuerpo.

As usual, preparation of the signatures, holes and stitching are the base of the work. 

 

Para este tipo de libros con un grosor normal y costura estándar no es necesario un telar, por lo que puede hacerse en cualquier rato siempre que tengas listos los cuadernillos con las serraduras hechas.

Como la piel va engrasada, para evitar que se manche el interior del cuaderno, suelo poner guardas gruesas y encolar estas a conciencia en el lado que quedará en contacto con la piel. 

As far as your signatures are ready,  for a normal notebook you do not need a sewing frame. I do it while watching TV, in the outside...everywhere I have an available table. 
As I mentioned the leather in this case is greased so in order to avoid grease going to the inside of the notebook, I use special endpapers thicker and with a kind of vinyl cover. I also use a good amount of PVA so it forms an extra protection. 

Este papel en tono albero hace perfectamente su función, es texturado y le da el punto justo de rigidez a la tapa. La mala noticia es que ya no se fabrica y ya he utilizado mis últimos pliegos. La buena es que he modificado el método para mantener una cierta flexibilidad en la tapa y poder utilizar cualquier tipo de papel de guarda. El truco lo dejo para un post futuro. 

Una vez construido sólo faltan dos pasos: cortar los excesos de piel y colocar la cinta para el cierre.  

This endpaper is also textured and I think it matches perfectly with the leather colour. Bad news are that it is out of stock everywhere so I am now using another method to get similar results. I a future post I will tell you about it.

         

Ah, y un último detalle. Grabar el nombre de la persona a quien va destinado. 

One last thing. I have learned how to stamp and the leather also behaves perfectly. In this one, the name of the future owner. 

         

Como digo, este tipo de cuaderno es muy cómodo, envejece perfectamente y mantiene un nivel de apertura elevado debido al método que empleo en la fabricación.

I really love these leather notebooks, aging is fantastic, they are rustic while elegant and as usual, the opening is great for writing.  

Yo ya tengo varios, uno con papel conqueror verjurado para escritura, otro con papel grueso para dibujo y otro en tamaño especial para viaje al que además he puesto los dos tipos de papel para poder escribir y dibujar. 

I have several, one with conqueror paper for writing (with my fountain pens), another one with thicker paper for drawing and a special smaller one for traveling where I have combined both types of paper....
